THE PARISH CHURCH OF SAINT MARY, ULVERSTON

St Mary’s has a Norman south doorway which at some time has been moved and reassembled. Arcades (arch) date from the 15th or early 16th Century. The west tower was built shortly after an older one collapsed during a gale in 1540. The clerestory and the low-pitched roof with alternating hammer-beams and tie-beams are probably the same period. Austin & Paley were responsible for restoration work carried out in 1864-6. The chancel was lengthened in 1904.

On a tomb chest are the recumbent effigies of William Sandys who died in 1559 and his wife who died several years later. The Sandys from Graythwaite Hall are buried at Hawkshead.

There are also brasses within a stone surround of Myles Dodding who died in 1606, and his wife, . Another Myles Dodding died in 1629 and he has a tablet with recumbent effigy between columns.

There is also a cartouche signed by Christopher Mason to John Braddyll who died in 1776.
